The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will hold examinations for Class X this year, but will give grades and not marks, Union HRD Minister Kabil Sibal announced on Monday.
From 2011, there will be no board examinations and students will only be graded. They will, however, be told their marks in percentage if they ask for it.
Class X examinations of the CBSE would be made optional from 2010-11, Sibal said, adding that students could take the examinations on demand after the board was abolished.
There will be two forms of assessment – formative and summative.
Last week, the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), comprising state education ministers, Union HRD ministers and some other ministers, had endorsed the proposal to make Class X exams optional.
